Yellow Watch - Severe Thunderstorm

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain.

Potential rainfall rates: locally 20 to 30 mm per hour in thunderstorms.

Time span: this afternoon until this evening.

Remarks: An area of strengthening thunderstorms has developed over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The storms are tracking eastward toward the west coast of the island. Some of these storms may become severe, producing brief but torrential downpours.

Small hail may also accompany the strongest storms.

Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
