Flash Flood Warning

At 1126 PM MDT, a river gauge on the Chinle Creek in Canyon de Chelly National Monument reported that the water levels have now fallen below flood stage, however downstream impacts will continue. Between 0.75 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring.

HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding.

IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, and normally dry washes.

For Chinle Creek at Chinle: At 1100 PM MDT the stage was 3.54 feet and falling. Flood Stage is 4.0 feet. Impacts: At 3.6 feet: Chinle Creek becomes impassable to recreational vehicles. At 4.0 feet: Water begins to encroach upon structures just upstream of the Highway 64 bridge near the Canyon de Chelly welcome center.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Chinle, Canyon De Chelly National Monument, Del Muerto and Mummy Cave Overlook.

This includes the following recreation areas and campgrounds... Cottonwood Campground, Tsegi Overlook, Junction Overlook, White House Overlook and Amtelope House Overlook.

This includes the following creeks, washes and rivers... Black Rock Canyon, Nazlini Wash, Chinle Wash, Coyote Wash, Tiis Ndiitsooi Wash, Muerto, Canyon del, Sheep Dip Creek and Agua Sal Creek.
