The Near-Equatorial Trough (NET) has become very active across eastern Micronesia, with numerous to widespread heavy showers south of Chuuk. A weak disturbance, Invest 93W, has also formed along the NET near 5N168E. The NET and associated convection look to drift northward over the next few days, as Invest 93W slowly moves west- northwest. Little development is expected with 93W as it moves out, however, it will help increase rainfall potential across the region.
Weno could see rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches through the weekend, with locally heavier amounts possible. This amount of rainfall will lead to flooding, localized flash flooding and possible mudslides over the next several days. The heavy rainfall will also result in reduced visibilities, making travel dangerous. Use caution when traveling over the next several days. The NET is showing the potential to remain active into the middle of next week, possibly resulting in a prolonged period of heavy rains, increasing the mudslide potential.
Residents of Chuuk should remain alert for heavy rainfall, flood and mudslides watches, warnings or advisories issued by your local National Weather Service office. Heed the advice of local Emergency Managers. Those who live in flood prone areas should work to secure and safeguard property.
