Earth between the Sun and an outer planet
The geometry behind Saturn at Opposition
At opposition, an outer planet appears opposite the Sun in Earth’s sky. Earth passes between the Sun and that planet in their orbital progression, making opposition a useful milestone for observing the planet during the night.
Locate Earth, the Sun and Saturn in the full-system view. Switch to true distances before comparing their spacing; a compressed view preserves directions from the Sun but changes angles seen from Earth.

Conjunctions are apparent meetings
Two objects can look close together from Earth while remaining far apart in space. Angular separation describes their apparent spacing, not their physical distance.

Opposition favors outer planets
An outer planet at opposition lies opposite the Sun in our sky. It is generally well placed during the night; its altitude and your weather still shape the observing opportunity.

Elongation measures distance from the Sun in the sky
Greatest elongation can make Mercury or Venus easier to find in the evening or morning. A low horizon and local twilight conditions are important, even when the separation is large.

A catalog event is not always observable
Some conjunctions occur close to the Sun. The event page preserves that distinction. Never sweep near the Sun with binoculars or a telescope to find a planet.
