Plain English

What these alerts mean

A warning means the hazard is happening or about to; a watch means conditions favour it; an advisory is a lesser hazard still worth planning around.

Rip Current Statement

Rip currents that can pull swimmers offshore are expected. Swim near a lifeguard and know how to escape a rip.

Wind Advisory

Sustained winds of 30 mph or more, or gusts to 45 mph, are expected. Use caution driving high-profile vehicles.

Flood Warning

Flooding of rivers, streams or low-lying areas is occurring or expected. Avoid flooded roads and monitor river levels.

High Surf Advisory

Large breaking waves are expected on beaches, with dangerous rip currents. Stay off jetties and out of the water.

High Surf Warning

Very large, destructive breaking waves are expected. Stay away from the surf zone entirely.

Tropical Storm Warning

Tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) are expected within 36 hours. Finish preparations.

Flash Flood Warning

Flash flooding is occurring or imminent. Move to higher ground; never drive into water covering a road.

Hurricane Warning

Hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or more) are expected within 36 hours. Complete preparations and follow evacuation orders.

Storm Surge Warning

Life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland from the shoreline is expected. Evacuate if ordered.

Flood Watch

Conditions are favourable for flooding. Have a plan in case a warning is issued.

Special Weather Statement

A heads-up about conditions that do not meet warning or advisory criteria but still deserve attention, such as a strong storm, patchy fog or a brief burst of snow.

Flood Advisory

Minor flooding of streets, streams or low-lying areas is expected. Expect ponding on roads and use caution when driving.

Coastal Flood Advisory

Minor coastal flooding is expected, usually around high tide. Expect water on low-lying roads near the shore.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

A storm with hail of 1 inch or larger, winds of 58 mph or more, or both, is occurring or imminent. Move indoors and away from windows.

Hurricane Watch

Hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours. Prepare your home and review evacuation routes.

Storm Surge Watch

Life-threatening storm surge is possible. Prepare to evacuate.

Dense Fog Advisory

Visibility of a quarter mile or less is expected. Slow down and use low beams.

Tornado Watch

Conditions are favourable for tornadoes in and near the watch area. Review your shelter plan and stay alert for warnings.

Extreme Wind Warning

Extreme sustained winds of a major hurricane (115 mph or more) are imminent or occurring within the next hour. Take shelter immediately in an interior room.

From the National Weather Service alert feed (api.weather.gov). NWS issues alerts by county and by forecast zone; this page lists every product that names Santa Rosa County. Forecast Bar checks the feed continuously and this page refreshes within a few minutes of a change.

What is the difference between a watch, a warning and an advisory?
