    Forecast Bar opens up on iPhone Duo

    Forecast Bar fits every way you hold iPhone Duo. Locations becomes a gallery of your places, hourly charts show three data points at once, the maps get new high-resolution forecasts, and Next Rain tells you when it is finally coming.

    Open it upiOS

    iPhone Duo gives the forecast room, and Forecast Bar now uses all of it. Open it and hold it on its side, and your conditions and your forecast sit in two even columns either side of the fold, running to the bottom of the screen with more of your background in view.

    Half-folded like a book, the columns part to clear the crease. Half-folded upright, Weather Details sits above the fold, with today and the days ahead below it. Tap any day and it opens in Weather Details beside your forecast.

    A desk glance when it's closediOS

    Close your iPhone Duo and stand it on its side, and it becomes a small weather display. The time and the weather now are large enough to read from across the room, with a temperature curve for the hours ahead. Stand it upright again and the app is back as you left it.

    Your places, as a galleryiOS

    Locations on iPhone Duo and iPad is a gallery now. Every place gets a card with its own scene, temperature and local time, so a list of cities reads like a look out of each window.

    Search for a place, set Home, rename it, or hold a card and drag it where you want it. Search can also show you somewhere without adding it to your favorites.

    iPad uses the whole screeniOS

    Settings on iPad now uses two columns, and it has its own button in the bar. The compare screens show the current numbers beside the charts.

    Trips you add yourselfiOSMac

    Upcoming Travel no longer needs your calendar. Add a trip by hand with a place and the first and last day, which suits travel that isn't on your calendar, or keeping an eye on where someone in your family is going. Turn Find Trips in Calendar off and the calendar is never read or asked for. Your trips sync across your devices, and Upcoming Travel is on the Mac in this release too.

    Add as Trip works in the Locations gallery too. On iPad and iPhone Duo, search for a place, turn on Add as Trip, pick it, and choose your days.

    Three lines on one chartiOSMacTV

    An hourly chart can now show up to three data points at once, like Temperature with Dew Point and Humidity. Each line gets its own color, and a data point with different units gets its own scale on the left. Your choices sync across your devices.

    When's the next rain?iOS

    Next Rain answers the question the hourly forecast can't: when is it next going to rain or snow, even if that's days away? It's a new widget with your backgrounds and icons, on the Lock Screen, and an Apple Watch complication. Apple Watch also gets two new corners, Big Temperature and Big Temperature + Range.

    Radar Layers shows every layer as a picture of what it draws, so you can see the difference between them before you choose.

    Temperature, Feels Like, Dew Point and Wind run on new high-resolution forecast maps, from 6 hours ago to 18 hours ahead, and every map layer now plays smoothly from frame to frame. Outside the US they use the best forecast model for your region: HRDPS in Canada, ICON-EU in Europe, and ECMWF everywhere else.

    Wind you can watchiOSMacTV

    Wind now draws animated flow lines, and it goes up. Winds aloft run from 5,000 to 34,000 ft. The colors are calmer too, saving the warm ones for gusty days.

    Precip Type is now Smooth Radar colored by rain, snow, ice and freezing rain, with the same smooth motion, forecast and scrubbing. Smooth Radar is the only radar now, and a seamless nowcast fills the gap between the newest scan and the forecast.

    Radar Views and Slow motion

    Radar sets every layer in one tap with Views, replays any half hour in Slow motion, and slides storms between frames. City Packs lead Theme & Visual Style, and Pollen Count, Air Quality and Sunrise & Sunset are redrawn.

    Radar is most of this release. Pick a View (Storm, Rain & Flood, Winter, Tropical, Travel or Clean) and the map layer and every overlay are set at once. Change any switch and the View becomes Custom, which you can save as your own.

    Pause on a moment and Slow motion replays the half hour around it slowly, past scans or forecast, so you can step through a storm frame by frame instead of watching it flash past in the loop. Between frames, storms now slide along their motion rather than fading from one frame into the next, so cells stay solid mid-step. Where the radar has them, two-minute scans fill Slow motion and the newest frames, and a switch in Radar settings turns them off.

    Away from the radar, City Packs move to the top of Theme & Visual Style, and Pollen Count, Air Quality and Sunrise & Sunset are redrawn.

    The watch app gets a sky

    A nearby personal weather station can tune your forecast to your own block, the background follows the real sky, hurricane forecast cones appear on the radar, and the Apple Watch app has a new design built around that sky.

    A sky that knows what time it isiOS

    A watch screen gets looked at for about two seconds, and Forecast Bar was spending both of them on numbers. The main screen has been rebuilt around the opposite idea: before you have read anything, the screen should already have told you something.

    So it has a sky now — not a stock picture, but a background drawn from where the sun actually is above your location and what the weather is actually doing. Cloud cover greys and flattens it, a storm darkens it, fog lifts it. It runs edge to edge behind the clock and fades to black, so every card below it still sits on a dark screen.

    Rose and amber on the way downiOS

    The colour comes from the sun's real elevation, not from a clock reading "evening". It moves between bands instead of stepping between them, so the screen you looked at an hour ago is not quite the screen you are looking at now, and the glow sits where the sun actually is rather than in a fixed corner.

    Stars, and a moon in the right placeiOS

    Once the sun is properly down and there is not too much cloud in the way, the stars come out. The moon takes the sun's place in the glow, at its own position and its own phase.

    What the sky deliberately does not do is rain on you. Falling rain and snow were built, looked at on a watch, and taken out again — at that size a thin streak reads as a scratch on the glass rather than as weather. And it knows when to stop moving altogether: with Always On, Low Power Mode or Reduce Motion the sky holds still.

    A week you can read in one lookiOS

    The days used to be a strip you pushed sideways, one column at a time. They are a list now, and the point of the list is the bars: every one is scaled to the same week, so a warm day's bar is visibly longer and further right than a cold one's.

    That turns "is it worth taking a coat on Friday" into a shape rather than five numbers you have to hold in your head and compare. Today's row carries a marker showing where the temperature is right now inside its own range.

    Data points became tilesiOS

    The bottom of the main screen was a table of small numbers in mismatched type. It is a grid of tiles now, and each one is drawn the way its particular reading wants to be read: humidity as a ring that fills, wind as a compass needle, UV in the standard bands, pressure as a trend, dew point as a word you can actually act on.

    Seventeen readings are available and you choose which of them appear, and in what order — which is new. The list used to be fixed.

    Tap one and its chart opens on that reading. Wind is the exception that goes somewhere better: it opens the Wind screen.

    A tile tap stopped hijacking your chartiOS

    If your charts kept opening on UV Index, this is why. Tapping a data tile used to write that reading in as the one the Charts section remembers, so a single curious tap three days ago quietly redecided what you saw every time afterwards. Now a tile opens its chart for the visit and leaves your choice alone; only the buttons under the chart change it. Charts open on Temperature until you pick something else.

    Those buttons can also say their names rather than show icons, from Charts settings — Temp, Feels, Rain, Wind, and so on. A droplet and a dewdrop are not that easy to tell apart at this size.

    Pollen, on your wristiOS

    A Pollen tile, new in this round. The level in a word, a five-band gauge showing where in the scale it falls, and underneath it the type actually driving the count — tree, grass, weed or mold, which is the part that decides whether today is your problem or somebody else's.

    It is a United States reading from The Weather Company's station network and it is part of Gold. The watch only asks for it once the tile is on your grid, so the first forecast after you add it fetches again; and when there is no reading to show, the tile isn't drawn rather than showing you a dash.

    The sun's whole pathiOS

    Sun & Moon is a new screen, and it draws the day as an arc rather than as two times in a list. The puck rides it where the sun actually is, with sunrise and sunset at its feet and the length of the day in the middle. Further down are first and last light, and the moon's phase.

    Which way the wind is coming fromiOS

    Wind is the other new screen, and the whole of it now fits on the screen. It first shipped as a big compass with the speed inside it and everything else a scroll away, which is a beautiful way to answer one third of the question. So the compass got smaller and moved left, the marker moved onto the ring where it can actually be read against the directions, and the speed, the description, the direction and the gusts came up alongside it.

    Underneath, the next twelve hours with its low and its peak — no scrolling on a 46mm watch. Knowing the wind is 8 mph is worth much less than knowing what it does by five o'clock.

    The gentlest end of the scale also stopped calling itself "Light Air", which is a term of art rather than an answer. It says Calm.

    The compass is sized from the screen, not from the big one, so the 40mm watch gets the same layout rather than a squeezed version of it.

    The hours, three waysiOS

    The hourly strip has a Style setting now. Plain is the aligned columns it has always drawn. Curve is the one above: the hour labels stay fixed along the top while each hour's icon and temperature float by how warm that hour is, so the shape of the day arrives before any of the numbers do. It is the iPhone's Timeline curve, on the wrist.

    **And Chart replaces the strip outright**, drawing the same window as one temperature curve with the chance of rain behind it. Three different answers to "what do the next twelve hours look like", none of them more correct than the others, which is exactly why it is a setting. It syncs with your iPhone, and it is in Watch Layout there too.

    Tap the chart and the full charts open on that curve, ready for the Digital Crown — the chevron in its corner says so. And the Charts section underneath does not draw the same temperature line a card later: while the strip is a chart, a Charts section left on Temperature switches to the chance of rain, or to wind on a dry day.

    Rain in the next hour, minute by minuteiOS

    The watch now asks Apple Weather for the next hour itself. The precipitation card has always drawn six hours in quarter-hour steps, which is the right window for deciding about this afternoon and the wrong one for deciding whether to run for it. Where Apple has coverage and something is actually falling, the card opens on Next Hour instead — sixty one-minute steps — with a 1 Hour / 6 Hours switch to step back out, and Apple's credit under the chart.

    It is the watch making that call over its own connection, not the phone relaying it. There is nothing to turn on and no extra tier. When Apple has no answer for where you are, or the hour is dry, nothing about the card changes from what it has always shown.

    Which window you prefer is now yours. Press 1 Hour or 6 Hours and that is the one the card and the screen open on next time, with the other standing in when your choice has nothing in it. The pills are the whole setting; there is no row for it anywhere.

    The six-hour view also decides whether there is anything to show the way the iPhone does, so snow and the lightest traces count, not just rain.

    Any day, hour by houriOS

    Every day's screen now carries that day's own hourly strip, not just today's — scoped to that date in the location's own time zone, with its sunrise and sunset marked in it. Looking up Friday and being told only its high and its low was always a slightly hollow answer.

    The heading reads the low first, on the left, with the high beside it. So does the range bar on the main screen, so does every row of the Week Ahead, and all of them are scaled to the same week — which they were not, quite, in the first build. A day cannot look warmer in one place than in another any more.

    The day and the night, told apartiOS

    Further down the same screen, the day and the night are summarised separately — each with its own icon, chance of rain, humidity, cloud cover and wind, and UV on the day side. A clear afternoon followed by a wet night is two different pieces of information, and it used to be averaged into one.

    Underneath sits that date's sun row. Sunrise and sunset are given in the location's own time zone now, so a saved city three zones away finally reads correctly instead of being converted to your wrist.

    Or none of the sky at alliOS

    If the sky is not what you want from a watch, it is one setting away from gone. The Compact header drops it entirely for a tight block of numbers on black, at about half the height, so the next section starts on the first screen.

    That is one of three presets. Glance is now-and-next and nothing else, Balanced is the arrangement most people will want, and Everything turns on every section there is — each of them one tap.

    Every section, where you want itiOS

    The main screen used to be reorderable and nothing more. Now every section can be shown, hidden or moved, the tiles are yours to pick, and the hourly strip and the week have their own options.

    The Layout screen opens with a live preview of your own main screen at the top — your order, your hidden sections, your header style, your weather. Not a drawing of one. The old preview was a fixed picture that had quietly drifted out of date.

    Data Points now sits above Week Ahead out of the box, because the readings you check are worth more scroll-priority than a week you look at once a day. If you had already put the sections in your own order, yours is left exactly as it is; only a layout nobody had touched moves.

    Settings that open on the appiOS

    The watch app's own Settings screen used to open on complications, with the watch app's own layout second, and it closed with a short lecture on how to add a complication to a watch face. The order is the other way round now, and the lecture is gone — you were in the app's settings, not on a watch face.

    On the phone, Watch Layout does the same job on a screen you can actually see. The watch pinned at the top is not an illustration of your watch screen — it is your watch screen, the same views the watch runs, with your own weather in them. Reorder a section and it moves. Hide one and it goes.

    There is a 46mm / 40mm toggle so you can check the small screen, chips that jump the preview to a section, and preset cards that show each preset rendered with your weather before you commit to it.

    Then drag the day past itiOS

    The timeline under the watch runs midnight to midnight. Drag it and the day goes by: the sky turns from dawn to blue to gold to black, the sunset cell slides along the hourly strip, the sun travels its arc, and the temperature follows the hourly forecast. A Now button snaps it back.

    There is a Sample Day to scrub through as well — morning fog, an afternoon storm, a clear night — so you can see every state the screen can be in without waiting for the weather to do it.

    All of it was designed for a 40mm screen as well as a 46mm one, which is the part of a redesign that is easy to say and tedious to actually do: no widths derived from the big screen, nothing truncated, nothing shrunk past the point of being readable.

    Turn the Crown, walk the weekiOS

    The watch has had the numbers for a long time. What it has not had is a way to look at the shape of them. A high and a low tell you very little about whether the rain arrives before you leave or after you get back, and a strip of twelve icons is a summary, not something you can interrogate.

    11.7 puts a real chart on the watch. Open it and turn the Digital Crown to move through the forecast hour by hour — and keep turning, because it does not stop at the end of today. The chart rolls on into tomorrow and the day after, about a week out, which is further than the watch app has ever been able to show you.

    Choose what it plots: temperature, feels like, chance of rain, wind, humidity, dew point, heat index, wind chill, UV, cloud cover, pressure or visibility, drawn the same way as the charts on iPhone so there is nothing new to learn. The main screen carries a Charts section covering the next twelve hours, and every day's detail screen now opens with that day's chart rather than a list.

    Heat index and wind chill, chartediOS

    Heat Index and Wind Chill have charts of their own, and tapping either tile opens its chart. Each follows the forecast hour by hour, with the air temperature it is measured against in the readout.

    On a mild day neither one applies, and both simply equal the temperature. Rather than leave you wondering why the "wind chill" is 72º, the chart says Not in effect.

    The two tiles read the same current observation as the Feels Like tile, so the three always agree: the heat index is the feels-like temperature when it is above the air temperature, and the wind chill is the feels-like temperature when it is below.

    Weather that is never quietly oldiOS

    Open the watch app and you get your forecast at once, provided it is under ten minutes old. Fresh weather replaces it a moment later, with no loading screen in between. Returning to the app and pressing Refresh work the same way: the forecast stays up while the new one is fetched.

    Older than ten minutes, and you see the loader until fresh weather arrives. A forecast from three hours ago looks exactly like one from three minutes ago, and showing it without a word would be a wrong answer. The loader also shows when the forecast on screen is for the wrong thing — a different city picked from the list, a change of units, or a location fix more than about 25 km from the place that forecast is for. And if a refresh fails, the forecast stays on screen only while it is still under ten minutes old.

    Your locations, straight awayiOS

    The location list opens at once, with the list the watch already has, and checks your synced list in the background — updating in place, and keeping what it had if that check fails.

    The city your iPhone calls Home is marked with a house, as it is on the phone. Current Location keeps its arrow, even when you are at home.

    A few things on the iPhone, while we were hereiOS

    A Sunrise & Sunset Lock Screen widget, in all three shapes. The circular one is a thick ring that fills toward the next event, with the sun riding the fill, the time large in the middle and no AM or PM, because the glyph in the ring's opening already tells you which one you are waiting for. The rectangular one names the event, counts down to it, and gives you the other end of the day and how much daylight there is between them. The inline one puts all of that on the line above the clock.

    And on the iPhone, "Show Temperature as Curve" stopped being a switch. It is two cards side by side now, each drawing three real hours of tomorrow's forecast in its own style, so you choose the one that looks right rather than flicking a toggle and going to look for what changed.

    The rain and Storm Intercept Live Activities stay readable when a phone call shares the Dynamic Island. The squeezed pill used to break "Rain" over two lines; it now shows the rain icon on its own when the word will not fit, and the expanded readings stay on one line.

    Complications you can actually readiOS

    A complication has a few square millimetres to work with, and Forecast Bar was spending them badly. On the Smart, 5 Day and Data Point Graph complications the current conditions and today's high and low ran together into a single line, so you had to parse it rather than read it. The high and low now sit on the right with an arrow each, the current temperature and its condition share one colour, and the high and low are red and blue. Nothing new was added — the same numbers are simply laid out so you can take them in at a glance.

    Those complications understand a tinted watch face now, too. A tinted face hands every complication two tones to work with, and Forecast Bar used to ignore them and render as one flat block. Home Screen widgets on the iPhone got the matching fix: on a tinted Home Screen the weather icons keep their shading instead of flattening into white silhouettes, so a cloud still looks like a cloud.

    And on the smallest watches, where there is least room of all, the 5 Day complication no longer cuts off its title or the bottom of its temperatures.

    The small things that were quietly wrongiOS

    Three fixes in this release are the kind you only notice because they annoyed you every day.

    The circular Cloud Cover, Dew Point, Humidity and Visibility complications used to sit on a grey placeholder instead of drawing their gauge. They draw now. The Pressure complication showed the wrong reading and ignored your unit and 24-hour settings; it follows them. And the Trio presets showed up in the complication picker without their names, which made choosing one a guess — they are named again.

    Just after midnight, the watch used to report today's high as though the day had not started, open the daily strip on yesterday, and drop the next sunrise from the evening hourly strip. All three read correctly now.

    Finally, the loading screen is drawn by the watch rather than played as an animation file: a glowing ring circles a location pin while the app finds you, then the pin gives way to sun, cloud, rain, storm, snow and night as your weather arrives.

    The panel closes again

    A Mac hotfix for macOS 27: the forecast panel you open from the menu bar closes again with Escape, a click outside it, or a click on its icon, and right-click and drag-to-detach work the way they did before.

    A way back outMac

    macOS 27 changed how a menu bar app owns its window, and 11.6.1 adopted the new way without keeping the old exits. Open the forecast panel from the menu bar icon and it stayed open: Escape did nothing, clicking outside it did nothing, switching to another app did nothing, and clicking the icon again did nothing. Right-click was the only thing that still closed it, which is not a route anybody would think to try.

    11.6.2 gives every one of them back. Escape closes the panel, a click anywhere outside it closes the panel, moving to another app closes the panel, and clicking the menu bar icon a second time closes the panel. Right-click and dragging the panel off to float it as a window work again too, both of which turned out to be broken by the same platform change.

    Everything else in this update is what 11.6.1 already brought to the Mac. If you are on macOS 27, this is the version to be on.

    New Trio and Sunrise & Sunset complications with settings you can change on the watch itself, an extra large Current Weather widget, and readiness for iOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS 27 and tvOS 27.

    Three gauges, one glanceiOS

    The Apple Watch app has been rebuilt, and the complications are the reason. Trio puts three big gauges of your choice under a location, condition or high/low header, and Smart Trio picks the three for you and changes them through the day — so a hot afternoon reads Temperature, Sunset and Dew Point rather than three flavours of temperature. Sunrise & Sunset gets its own complication, a large time over AM/PM in gold and rose, timed in the Smart Stack around each event.

    Every gauge is bigger, uses the app's own icons, and keeps one clear wind direction marker. On faces that tint their complications the gauges hold their colours, with a marker set apart from the ring so a tinted face still reads at a glance.

    You no longer have to reach for your phone to change any of it. Settings for every complication, the watch app layout and units now live on the watch itself, and changes travel back to the iPhone in the background. On the iPhone, the Apple Watch screen is a gallery: Trio presets drawn with the real gauges, every picker a grid of gauges rendered for real, and a full preview pinned above each picker that updates as you tap.

    One thing to expect after updating: complications you have placed on your faces need adding once more. That is a one-time effect of the new way watch apps are built, and both the watch and the iPhone show you the steps until one is back.

    This release is the one that meets iOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS 27 and tvOS 27. On iOS 27 a tall extra large widget follows the app's own layout with three data points you pick. On macOS 27 Forecast Bar is built with the new release tools, so its windows, menus and controls follow the system, including the menu bar overflow and keyboard controls.

    Current Weather comes in an extra large size on both — 24 hours over two rows, or 12 hours with 10 days — and the extra large daily list can switch to compact rows carrying the day, its icon and a bar showing where that day sits against the rest of the week, which fits nine days where six used to go. Widget borders are even on every side at every size, and hold steady while a widget redraws.

    One button for the radariOSMac

    The radar's overlays are now one button with independent switches — weather warnings, lightning, storm cells, cameras and road information — while the Layers picker goes on choosing the main weather map. Apple TV gets the same idea in its own form: warnings, lightning, storm cells and weather outlooks each switch on and off on their own.

    Behind that button, Gold on iPhone and iPad and Pro on the Mac open up DOT-reported road conditions and weather hazards, measured road and air temperatures, local storm reports, river gauges and fire perimeters. Road cameras now cover twelve states — Alabama, Arizona, California, Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio and Washington — with live video where the agency offers it, snapshots where it does not, and a grid of nearby views. Coverage varies by agency.

The new Compare screen puts the two forecasts next to each other — every measurement charted at once, two lines with the disagreement shaded between them, high and low bars paired by day — and names the single biggest disagreement. Where the lines sit on top of each other, the next few hours are settled. Where they part is where to hedge. Drag across a chart and both readings follow your finger.

    You don't have to leave the forecast to check. A new bar at the foot of the screen carries your source, Time Machine and the comparison together, and the eye above any hourly chart overlays the second forecast in place. It works for comparing two cities, too.

If you also get notifications for that kind of alert, the app asks whether to stop those too, and the Hidden Alert Types list in Settings brings any type back.

    Forecast Bar now watches individual storm cells — tells you when one is coming for you, walks you through it live on the Lock Screen, and hands you a receipt of what hit.

    Storm InterceptiOS

    A severe storm heading your way now runs on your Lock Screen. How likely it is to turn severe, how far out it is, and a countdown to when it reaches you — updating without you opening anything.

    The countdown ticks between updates rather than sitting frozen between pushes, and the card follows the storm as it changes: strengthening, weakening, or sliding past. In the Dynamic Island it collapses to the probability alone, in the severity's colour, and expands on a long press.

    The state we're most pleased with is the one that tells you to relax. When a storm is going to miss, it says so — the closest it will come, and then it gets out of your way. A weather app that only ever escalates teaches you to ignore it.

    It mirrors to the Apple Watch Smart Stack, the same way precipitation alerts already do.

    Storms on the radariOSMacTV

    Radar shows you where the rain is. It does not tell you which storm in a line is the one to worry about.

    Storm Cells draws every tracked cell with its probability of turning severe, read straight off NOAA's ProbSevere guidance. A squall line stops being an undifferentiated smear and becomes a row of numbers, one of which is bigger than the others.

    Open a cell and you get the whole read: the severity trend, the split between hail, wind and tornado, estimated hail size, a probability sparkline from the last hour, lightning flash rate and echo top.

    The same guidance is available as an alert. Severe Storm Probability and Hail Size join custom alerts — pick a distance, a probability or a hail size, and get told when a storm within that radius crosses it.

    Severe RiskiOSMacTV

    On a handful of days a year, the national outlook knows hours before the first watch is issued that your area is in trouble. Those are the only days this card appears.

    It is deliberately rare. Marginal and Slight risks cover much of the country through the season, and by the time that level of risk matters the watch and warning alerts already own the moment with better information. So the card holds itself back for SPC Enhanced and above, and WPC Moderate and above — the days where the outlook genuinely leads everything else.

    One line per risk, the hours it covers, and a tap that opens the radar with that outlook drawn over the map. The map overlay is not so precious: it draws every tier, because severe risk has to be read against the storms sitting inside it.

    Severe Outlook AlertsiOSMac

    By the time a watch is issued, the day is already happening. NOAA's outlook goes out hours earlier — it is the forecaster's read on how the day could turn — and until now Forecast Bar could draw it for you but never tell you it had changed.

    Now it can. Turn on Outlook Upgrades under Weather Alerts and you get told when the outlook where you are is raised.

    Severe storms and flash flooding are separate switches, because they are separate products on unrelated scales: a Moderate risk of flooding and a Moderate risk of storms are not the same sentence. Both start at the level the Severe Risk card already uses, so an alert means a genuinely unusual day rather than a routine one. Move them down if you want more warning than that.

    Storm Tracker and the storm reportiOSMacTV

    Hail damage has a habit of surfacing months later, when a roofer points at something and asks when it happened.

    After a storm passes over you, Forecast Bar writes down what hit. Peak severe probability, peak hail probability, the estimated hail size, whether it went directly overhead or passed nearby, and the window it happened in.

    Storm Reports keeps them for two years, which is roughly the timescale on which that roofer turns up. It is reachable from the card itself and from the Weather Alerts screen.

    While a storm is still on its way, the Storm Tracker card carries the live version of the same information: probability with a trend arrow, hail size, distance and motion, and either an arrival time or the reassurance that it will pass wide.

    Smart Data PointsiOSMacTV

    A UV index at midnight is not information. Neither is a rain accumulation of zero on a dry week, or a wind gust reading on a still day.

    Forecast Bar can now choose its own tiles from what the weather is actually doing. UV while the sun is up, accumulation once it is raining, gusts when it is gusty; fog, heat, chill, mugginess and an approaching sunset all ramp in and out on their own curves. Pick how much you want — Only Important, which can legitimately show nothing on a calm day, Key Basics at about three, or Extended at about six.

    It also stops repeating itself. No precipitation chance tile above a rain chart that is already showing you the rain. No Feels Like beside a headline that already says it. Gusts fold into the wind tile, which was showing the range anyway.

    The full grid sorts by what matters right now rather than a fixed order. And if you would rather do it yourself, drag a tile — it takes your arrangement and hands control straight back, no setting to find.

    Compare cities without leaving the forecastiOSMac

    Up to five of your saved cities can sit right on the forecast, above or below it, each with its own local time, conditions and temperature. One tap compares, and the arrow beside it switches to that city outright.

    Set a Home location and it leads the card whenever you are away from it — so the city you are travelling in is on screen, and the one you left is right underneath it. At home it quietly folds away, because then it is just where you already are.

    Compare also stops losing your place: leave it on Current, Hourly or Daily and that is where it opens next time.

    The daily forecast table already tells you the highs, the lows and the chance of rain. Repeating those in a paragraph above it would be words for the sake of words.

    So the Week Ahead Outlook is written to say only what the table cannot show: the shape of the week. The warming or cooling arc, the front and when it clears, the wet stretch against the dry break, the one day that stands apart from the rest.

    One to three sentences, above your daily forecast. It ships switched off — turn it on in Settings › Forecast Bar AI, alongside the rest of Smart Weather Stories.

    City packs, photographic scenes and the satellite map are the best-looking backgrounds in the app, and the hardest to read a forecast over.

    Two new sliders fix that without throwing the picture away. Blur smooths the detail out while keeping every colour, so a night skyline stays a night skyline. Dimming darkens it for extra contrast. They work independently, they apply to every screen that draws the background, and both start at off — in Settings › Theme & Visual Style.

    Astronomy AlertsiOSMac

    Knowing that a meteor shower exists is only half the answer. Forecast Bar now tells you whether it is worth going outside where you are.

    Meteor showers join eclipses and supermoons, with major showers and predicted outbursts recommended from the start. Tonight's most relevant event can appear directly in the forecast with its best local viewing time.

    Open an event for the useful part: the ideal rate beside what you can realistically expect nearby, the best dark window, direction and height in the sky, cloud and rain chances, and practical guidance. Astronomy alerts can also skip events when your local viewing conditions look poor.

    City Packs are photographs of real cities that follow your weather. Not a static wallpaper — the scene tracks your live conditions and the time of day, so the city behind your forecast is overcast when you are, and dark when you are.

    They arrive on their own. Open the app in a city we have a pack for, or switch to one, and the scene is simply there, crossfading in. When the pack doesn't apply, it steps aside. The background picker now leads with them, and Remove All clears every download at once.

    Packs run about 7 MB per city and download over Wi-Fi by default, with a cellular option in Settings and Low Data Mode always respected. They show up in widgets too, framed so skylines, monuments and landmarks survive the crop.

    Sunset scores, and a new radar engine

    Sunrise & Sunset Quality scores the sky before it happens, and a rebuilt radar plays back faster and sharper on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

    Two big pieces in this one, and they pull in opposite directions: one is about looking up, the other is about looking down at a map.

    Sunrise & Sunset Quality answers the question you actually have at 7pm: is tonight worth walking outside for? It scores the coming sunset on colour potential, twilight timing, sky clarity and cloud layers, and it shows you the reasoning rather than just a number. Recent results stick around afterwards, so you can tell it whether it got the call right — and upload a photo if it did.

    Under that, the scoring itself got better at reading satellite cloud thickness, aerosols and storm activity, and stopped being fooled by thin cirrus veils.

    Next-Generation Radar, in betaiOSMac

    The radar was rebuilt. Playback is faster, the imagery is higher resolution, and the animation is genuinely fluid rather than stepping frame to frame.

    The part you feel most is that it stays responsive while it runs — pan, zoom, scrub the timeline or switch layers mid-loop and it keeps up. On the Mac it loops continuously, and it releases the machine the moment you close the window instead of quietly burning cycles in the background.

    It ships as a beta because it is new, not because it is unfinished.

    Top Shelf — the weather that sits above your Home Screen when Forecast Bar is in the top row — got its own tab and a one-click setup, with onboarding that actually explains what it is. Radar moved onto the main screen: press play without leaving Weather, and pan around the map with the remote.

    Style settings now preview themselves, so you can see Summary against Compact and Timeline against Chart before choosing. Backgrounds, scenes and icon sets moved to picture pickers. Today's forecast starts expanded. Severe weather alerts got more compact and gained a zoomable map. And locations you add on your iPhone, iPad or Mac now simply appear on the TV.

    The temperature comes to the Dock

    Dock Mode shows the current temperature on the icon, the menu bar keeps itself current without a click, and radar opens fast.

    If you run Forecast Bar in Dock Mode, the icon now carries the current temperature. That was the one thing Dock Mode couldn't do that the menu bar could.

    The menu bar itself got the more important fix: it keeps its temperature current on its own, without needing you to click it first. Radar opens faster too, and reloads recent imagery instantly instead of re-fetching a loop you were just looking at.

    The Mac app finally introduces itself: a real setup window, a notification checklist, and a spotlight pointing at the menu bar so you can find it afterwards.

    A menu bar app has a specific problem: once it launches, it is a tiny icon in a row of tiny icons, and a fair number of people never found it again.

    So the Mac app now opens a real setup window on first run — pick your places, walk a checklist of the notifications worth turning on, take a short tour. And when you finish, a spotlight points straight at Forecast Bar in your menu bar, because knowing the app installed correctly is not the same as knowing where it went.

    Radar picked up keyboard shortcuts and proper zoom controls in the same release, and a stack of smaller Mac annoyances went with it: the quit prompt on wake, the Weather Alerts toggle that wouldn't stay on, the menu bar sitting blank at login while the network came up.
