Snow & winter weather

Know when the rain turns to snow.

A winter storm comes down to what's falling, how much of it there will be, and whether the roads are passable. Forecast Bar puts all of that on the map, with Precip Type on Smooth Radar, 24-hour snow totals, and road conditions and cameras.

Free to download; live weather requires a subscription. On iPhone and iPad, every subscription includes a 7-day free trial for new subscribers; Mac plans do not. Mac and iOS plans are separate; Apple TV is included with Forecast Bar Gold on iOS.

What's falling

Rain, snow or ice, on the radar you already use.

Choose Precip Type and Smooth Radar colors itself by what's falling, with the same motion, forecast and scrubbing as the regular radar. Drag ahead to see when the changeover reaches you. Rain keeps the radar's usual colors, as in this frame from a rainy day.

  • Four kinds: rain, snow, ice and freezing rain
  • Stays on the 2 Hour or 18 Hour timeline you're on
  • Snow, ice and freezing rain each get their own colors

How much

Snow totals on the map and in your forecast.

Snow 24 Hour shades the map with the total for the 24 hours ending at each frame, so you can drag ahead to see where the heaviest band ends up. Your forecast says how long it lasts, and how much the day's forecast expects.

  • Snow 24 Hour and Precipitation 24 Hour map layers
  • Totals up to three days ahead, every 6 hours past the first 18
  • A temperature-based snow ratio, so wet snow and powder aren't counted alike
  • A custom alert when forecast accumulation passes your number

Getting there

One tap for the whole winter map.

The Winter radar View sets the map to Precip Type and turns on snow and ice road conditions, weather road alerts, road and air temperatures, and cameras. Tap a camera to look at the road itself. More on the road conditions page.

  • Set everything from the Views row in Overlays
  • Road surface and air temperatures in pins on the map
  • Cameras along the road, as live video or snapshots
  • Save your own View for your commute

An honest note: what these maps can't promise.

Precip Type coloring covers the contiguous US. Outside it, and at the closest zoom levels, the radar draws in its normal colors. In Low Data Mode, the 24-hour totals stop at about 18 hours ahead.

Totals ahead of now are forecasts. Past hours of Precipitation 24 Hour use NOAA's MRMS observations over the contiguous US. Past snow, and past precipitation elsewhere, comes from the forecast at the time, so read it as an estimate and not a measurement.

Road information comes from transportation agencies. A road with no report isn't necessarily clear, and a temperature on its own doesn't confirm ice.
