New in Forecast Bar 11.9.
The animated flow lines, winds aloft, the high-resolution wind map and charting speed and gusts together arrive with version 11.9, which is on its way to the App Store. Hourly wind, gust alerts and the Apple Watch Wind screen are in the app today.
Wind in Forecast Bar, in short
- Hourly forecast
- Forecast Bar charts wind speed and wind gusts by the hour, with an arrow marking the wind direction at each hour.
- Wind map
- The Wind Speed map draws animated flow lines and plays from 12 hours ago to as much as 18 hours ahead.
- Winds aloft
- The wind map goes from the surface up to 5,000, 10,000, 18,000, 30,000 and 34,000 ft.
- Gust alerts
- A custom notification checks the forecast at a time you choose and names the first hour gusts will pass your threshold.
- Units
- Wind can read in mph, km/h, m/s or knots, with direction as a compass point, degrees or both.
- Apple Watch
- The Apple Watch Wind screen shows a compass, the speed, a plain-language description, gusts and the next 12 hours.
- Plan
- Hourly wind is part of Silver and Gold, or Plus and Pro on the Mac, and the Apple Watch app comes with Silver or Gold. The wind map is Gold on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV and Pro on the Mac, and gust alerts need Gold or Pro.

Open Wind Speed or Wind Gusts and the day becomes a chart, with an arrow at each hour showing which way the wind is blowing. Tap another day to plan ahead, or drag along the chart to read any hour.
- Wind speed and gusts, hour by hour
- Direction arrows along the line
- In 11.9, chart speed and gusts together on one scale
- Choose mph, km/h, m/s or knots
- Direction as a compass point, degrees or both
Follow the wind across the map.
The Wind Speed layer draws lines that flow with the wind, so you can see a storm's circulation and where the wind is strongest. Warm colors are saved for the gusty days, and the chip above the timeline climbs from the surface to the jet stream's neighborhood.
- 12 hours back to as much as 18 hours ahead
- Surface, then 5,000, 10,000, 18,000, 30,000 and 34,000 ft

A heads-up when gusts pass your number.
Set a custom notification on Wind Gusts, pick your number and the time of day you want to hear about it. At that time Forecast Bar checks the forecast and, if gusts will pass your number, tells you the first hour they do.
- Thresholds from 1 to 50 mph, in your own wind units
- Check the next 24 hours, the daytime or overnight
- Wind Speed works the same way, rising above or falling below
- Custom alerts cover much more than wind
The wind, on your wrist.
The Wind screen answers everything at once: a compass showing where the wind is coming from, the speed, a plain description of it, and gusts when they're stronger than the wind. Below that sits a chart of the next 12 hours. It's part of the Apple Watch app.
- A compass marker showing the wind's direction
- Speed and a Beaufort description, like Moderate Breeze
- The next 12 hours, from the low to the peak
- Open it from the Wind tile, or add the Wind section to the main screen
An honest note: a gust alert is a forecast.
Gust alerts read the hourly forecast once a day, at the time you pick. They aren't a live reading from a sensor near you, and wind can change quickly over short distances, so check the chart before you set out.
Heights on the wind map come from standard pressure levels, so they're nominal rather than exact. Map detail also varies by region: see the forecast maps page.
